How We've Been Spending Our Time at Home

reading a book

With all this extra time we have, the New Society Publishers team has been keeping busy while staying home. For many, December is typically filled with social gatherings, busy shops and holiday rush. However, this year looks different for most people, with less holiday hustle and bustle and more time spent at home. So we wanted to know, what does our team do with their free time?

Judith Plant - Cofounder and Publisher Emeritus

Judith Plant has been spending her time cozy at home reading some good books. Currently, she is enjoying Richard Heinberg's forthcoming book Power. Though she’s really enjoyed it, this title isn’t set to come out until 2021, but early reviews of amazing books are one of the perks of founding a publishing company. We have several other thought-provoking titles by Richard Heinberg available to help you get familiar with his work in anticipation of his forthcoming book.

EJ Hurst - Sales Manager

EJ Hurst, our Sales Manager, has been busy connecting with her past by making sauerkraut using the recipe in Farmstead Chef. She even has her grandfather's cabbage slicing board and sauerkraut crock to make it with. She mentioned that the town her grandfather was born in even has heritage days every year where they make and serve sauerkraut and sausage!

She’s also been using Let’s Talk Race, coming off press soon, to hold conversations between herself and her friend. EJ discovered that her family members were United Empire Loyalists who received land that was taken from First Nations during the settlement of the Haldimand Treaty of 1784. Interestingly, her close friend is of Kanyen'kehaka (Mohawk) descent from the same area, so they have been having some very interesting and informative conversations about history, settlers, and land.

Brittany Hemmerling - Marketing Assistant

Brittany Hemmerling has been spending more time in the kitchen developing her culinary skills. Most recently she has been using The Art of Plant-Based Cheesemaking to find plant-based cheese alternatives for some of her favourite recipes. She used the Walnut Ricotta Recipe that we posted on our blog to make a ricotta for lasagne.

Sue Custance - Publishing Director

Sue Custance plans on tucking into classic and newer titles from New Society during the break. This break offers her a chance to have some downtime and a break from the screen time that 2020 demanded. She plans to read some inspiring titles such as Human Permaculture, Intrinsic Hope, and some older classics such as Coming Back to Life and Slow is Beautiful. For gifts, Sue is gifting the lovely work of Satish Kumar, and Elegant Simplicity to her adult children. What better time to spread Satish's message of peace, joy, and the art of living well!

Caylie Graham - Office/Editorial Assistant

Caylie Graham is spending her time pickling with Your Edible Yard by Crystal Stevens. Using the grocery store's budgeted section, she's turning vegetables into tasty treats to add that acid and umami kick to any meal. She recently pickled red onions, which she uses to elevate any food like a chicken melt, curry, or salad . She plans on continuing to pickle more through the winter break.
