Transform the “off-season” into a productive and profitable time of year with field-tested strategies for abundant winter harvests.

For many northern growers, winter has long been considered a time of dormancy, but it is actually an untapped opportunity for high-quality, local food production. The Winter Market Gardener serves as a definitive guide to year-round vegetable production, proving that fresh harvests are possible even in the darkest months. Based on years of intensive experimentation with techniques, tools, and cultivars, this handbook provides the technical roadmap for farmers and serious gardeners to supply local markets when fresh produce is most in demand.

The methodology presented here was developed and refined at Quebec’s renowned Ferme des Quatre-Temps and Les Jardins de la Grelinette. Authors Jean-Martin Fortier and Catherine Sylvestre combine their deep field experience and agronomic expertise to cover every aspect of the winter cycle—from choosing frost-hardy crops and designing efficient unheated greenhouses, to mastering the precise scheduling required for continuous harvests. By integrating simple shelters like row covers and caterpillar tunnels, you can protect your soil and your crops without the need for expensive, energy-intensive heating systems.

Beyond the technical skills, this book is about building community resilience and creating a more stable, year-round income for the small-scale farmer. It includes detailed profiles for dozens of winter crops, offering specific cultivation and storage advice tailored to cold regions. Whether you are looking to extend your CSA season or simply feed your family through the winter, this beautifully illustrated resource provides the inspiration and actionable guidance needed to turn winter into your most rewarding season yet.

Winter Market Gardening: Frequently Asked Questions

Is it really possible to grow vegetables in the winter without heating my greenhouse?

Yes, by using a combination of “simple shelters” like row covers inside unheated greenhouses and selecting specific frost-hardy cultivars, you can harvest fresh greens and root crops throughout the winter.

Do I need specialized equipment to start winter growing?

While some specialized tools like specific seeders or heavy-duty row covers are helpful, the focus is on “appropriate technology”—low-cost, efficient tools that don’t require heavy machinery.

Which crops are best suited for a northern winter harvest?

The book identifies dozens of crops, including various hardy greens (like kale and spinach), root vegetables (like carrots and leeks), and storage crops that provide the highest quality for local markets.
