Bookshelves for curious readers at Coho Books, downtown books spot with a mountain logo.

As part of our ongoing Bookstore Spotlight series, we’re delighted to highlight independent bookstores that help sustain vibrant literary communities. In the heart of Campbell River is Coho Books, bringing together passionate booksellers, devoted readers, and a love of local stories.

Coho Books has been a cornerstone of Campbell River’s literary life since 2007. Founded by Pirkko Anderson, the shop changed hands in 2015 when Jane Hirst and Lois Watson took over, and since 2021 it has been lovingly owner-operated by Leah Jesse. In 2023, Coho Books settled into its refreshed downtown location on Shoppers Row, a move that reflects both its growth and its deep connection to the community.

Recognized by the CIBA as being “known for its community involvement, excellent browsability, and passionate staff,” Coho Books lives up to that praise. The shelves showcase a strong mix of new and used titles, with a clear love for local writing. As the team puts it, “books by local authors like John Vaillant and Michael Christie always do well.” Add in two beloved bookstore dogs and a welcoming, unhurried atmosphere, and it’s easy to see why readers linger.

Beyond books, Coho Books also offers puzzles, games, toys, stationery, greeting cards, apparel, and gift cards. Their trade-in program lets customers exchange books and puzzles for used book credit, helping keep stories circulating within the community (details are outlined clearly in their trade-in policy).

Coho Books embodies many of the values we hold dear at New Society Publishers: local resilience, community care, and a belief in the power of ideas to shape a place. Leah’s passion for independent bookselling shines through in the store’s thoughtful curation and deep engagement with Campbell River and the wider North Island literary scene.

Independent bookstores like Coho Books are vital cultural spaces. They support local authors, create room for conversation, and offer an alternative to algorithm-driven reading. For readers who care about where their books come from and the communities that make them possible, this is a shop worth supporting.
