New Society Publishers became a Certified B Corporation™ in June 2016. With this certification, New Society Publishers receives recognition for our existing social and environmental performance standards and becomes part of a community striving to do even more. Individually, B Corps meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability and aspire to use the power of markets to solve social and environmental problems.
What is a B Corp?
Certified B Corporations are businesses that go beyond profit. They commit to a triple bottom line—people, planet, and profit—to balance the interests of shareholders with those of workers, suppliers, the community, and the environment. It’s about using business to drive positive change, rather than simply avoiding harm.
At New Society Publishers, we take this responsibility seriously. We don’t just publish books; we provide tools for a world of change. Our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility is reflected in everything we do, from printing on recycled paper to maintaining a carbon-neutral status, volunteering in our community, and being one-third employee-owned.

The way businesses operate directly impacts the world. As a publisher of books on sustainability, social justice, and activism, we know that change requires more than inspiration: it requires action. Businesses have to lead the way when it comes to creating a more sustainable and just world.
That’s why we’ve joined the Race to Zero, setting science-based targets to cut our Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, and achieve net zero by 2050. Through initiatives like the Community Carbon Marketplace, we support community-based projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ensuring that our business practices align with our values.
The Community Carbon Marketplace is a community-based carbon exchange initiative to enable individuals, businesses, and local governments to balance their carbon footprints by purchasing carbon offsets from community-based projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

What does this mean to New Society?
Being a B Corp also means creating spaces that are diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A business is more than a company; it’s a community. A healthy community thrives when its businesses lead by example. Not just inviting people in, but empowering them to feel welcome in the first place. What kind of community is your business?
- Does it treat employees fairly?
- Does it respect the environment?
- Does it actively contribute to the greater good?
At New Society, we’re proud to stand alongside other B Corps that commit to transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities, and the planet.

B Corp certification is about committing to progress. It’s about being transparent, taking responsibility, and continuously striving to do better.
Accountability is essential for an organization and for a society. Without it, it is difficult to get people to assume ownership of their own actions because they believe they will not face any consequences. BLab JEDI Strategic Plan
